Van 3 tot en met 5 oktober landt de 16e editie van het Afro_Vibes Festival in het Compagnietheater. Het festival brengt actuele theater- en dansvoorstellingen, muziek, film en design uit grootstedelijke culturele hotspots in Afrika.
Afro_Vibes brengt in deze editie actuele makers en kunstenaars uit Zuid-Afrika, Nigeria, Angola, Oeganda, Congo-Kinshasa en uit Nederland. Zij laten zien dat we vanuit Nederland en Afrika vanuit verschillende perspectieven naar de wereld kijken maar dat we vaak dezelfde vragen hebben, over wie we zijn, wat we willen zijn, wat onze identiteit is en waarom we handelen zoals we handelen. Op donderdag 3 oktober openen we het festival met een feestelijke avond vol dans, theater, een expositie en muziek.
Festival thema Speak Truth to Power
Dit jaar is het festival thema Speak Truth to Power. Onze huidige wereld kent een overdaad aan informatie. Met de groei aan ongefilterde (online) informatiebronnen rijst de vraag welke informatie waar is en welke niet. Is het begrip waarheid een illusie geworden in een wereld waarin sociale media bestaande stereotypen versterken door mensen (fake) nieuws, beelden en verhalen te tonen waarmee ze het op voorhand al eens zijn? Afro_Vibes heeft het thema gekozen als artistiek weerwoord op de huidige tijd waarin verschillende machtsstrijden dagelijks in het nieuws te zien zijn. Van autoritaire regimes tot studenten die hun stem laten horen voor het klimaat en betaalbaar onderwijs. Waar vrouwen zich verenigen voor gelijkheid en tegen seksueel geweld, waar nieuwkomers en migranten hun positie moeten verdedigen en waar online media en nieuwszenders ingezet worden als blik naar de wereld, maar ook voor propaganda en fake nieuws.

AFRO_VIBES
From 3 to 5 October Compagnietheater houses the 16th edition of the Afro_Vibes Festival. The festival brings contemporary theater and dance performances, music, film and design from urban cultural hotspots in Africa.
In the 16th edition of Afro_Vibes Festival, contemporary theatre makers and artists from South Africa, Nigeria, Angola, Uganda, Congo-Kinshasa and The Netherlands take the stage. They show that as Africans and Europeans, we look at the world from different perspectives, but that we often have the same questions about who we are, what we want to be, what our identity is and why we act the way we act. Thursday the 3rd of October, we host the grand opening of the festival: an evening filled with dance, theater, an exhibition and music.
Festival thema Speak Truth to Power
This year’s theme is Speak Truth to Power. The world is overflowing with data and information and with the rise of unfiltered (online) sources the question arises: what is real and what is fake? Has truth become an illusion in a world in which social media reinforces existing stereotypes by showing people (fake) news, images and stories with which they already agree? Afro_Vibes has chosen this theme as an artistic response to current times in which various power struggles are featured in the news every day. From authoritarian regimes to students who make their voices heard for climate change and affordable education. Where women unite for equality and against sexual violence, where refugees and migrants have to defend their position and where online media and news channels are used to look at the world, but also for propaganda and fake news
