Conversations about identity and belonging

DISCLAIMER: You do not have to read any of the books to join the discussion. Come as you are.

The Book Club has teamed up with De Nieuwe Liefde to host conversations about identity and belonging.

The identities that shape the world, our struggles, and our hopes, are social ones, shared with countless others. Our sense of self is shaped by our family, but also by affiliations that spread out from there, like our nationality, culture, class, race and religion. How does our sense of self define where we feel that we belong? Especially in the current political climate?

Through meaningful conversation, we will interact with books that touch on the complexities of identity and belonging. During this book club our main read will be The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates. Our host for this session is Kriticos, dreamer and founder of The Book Club.

These books will be the backbone of our conversation:

  • The Message by Ta-Nehisi Coates (first three essays)
  • The lies that bind us by Kwame Anthony Appiah
  • Girl, Women, Other by Bernardine Evaristo
  • The Master’s Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master’s House by Audre Lorde

Kriticos

Kriticos is Creator and main host of the Book Club; Kriticos is of Zambian and Tanzanian descent and has been based in Belgium most of his life. He loves discussions about love, spirituality and especially loves questioning the status quo and the systems put in place in today’s society.
